City of Mist is a tabletop role-playing game from Son of Oak studio about ordinary people in a modern city becoming incarnations of myths and legends. The system is powered by a modified version of the Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) system. Powered by the Apocalypse games are centered around resolving what characters do as “Moves”. Some examples of moves for characters include sneak around, investigate, convince, face danger, flashback, and make hard choices. A full list of moves with descriptions is available for download along with other game resources here. The game also uses “tag” based skills, which allows for creative and unique character creation and play experiences. If your character is cold-hearted for example, that tag will give you a bonus on your dice to any situation where it could be beneficial, such as refusing to give into someone or carrying out the results of a difficult decision. But if that tag would interfere with something, such as showing empathy, you may receive a negative instead!
One of my favorite things about City of Mist is that it’s so explosive with character development. In the game, you play as what is called a “Rift”, and ordinary person within which a legend has awakened. Your roleplay includes playing a combination of both people, for example, an office secretary with the powers of Zeus. I would hate to be the intern that’s late with her coffee. The game is a fantastic blend of magic and mundane. As your life unfolds you’re constantly faced with decision and opportunities to evolve and change, possibly for the worse. As the game progresses you need to balance your mundane (Logos) with your magic (Mythos) lest one overpower the other.
Inspired by the film noir and detective comic book genres, the game focuses on your groups search for answers to cases in a city that is more than what it seems. Live your life by day and by night investigate unsolved cases, uncover the truth behind what’s really going on, and confront the shadows pulling the strings from behind the scenes. The investigations and interactions in the game are very bold and cinematic, with the story moving fluidly.
The game was successfully overfunded through Kickstarter and you can get the starter guide as well as the books through the City of Mist website. If this sounds like fun, let’s get you into the game! All you need to play is:
